Gulshan Hossain Receives Bengal Foundation Award

Artist Gulshan Hossain has received the prestigious Bengal Foundation at the 20th National Art Exhibition, organised by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The prize carries a cash award of BDT 100,000. Gulshan's work can be seen at a month-long exhibition beginning on 21 June at the Shilpakala Academy Gallery. The Bengal Foundation has bestowed this award to a number of deserving artists since 1988.

Aranya Opens New Outlet in Dhanmondi

Aranya has opened a new retail outlet in Dhanmondi, in House 33, Road 27. They offer a wide range of naturally dyed fabrics, apparel and handicrafts. Aranya was established in 1990 as a fair trade micro-enterprise with a small-scale production centre and showroom. It set out to prove the commercial viability of naturally dyed products and in the years since its inception it has achieved just that. Today, Aranya operates under the Bengal Foundation and has expanded its production and promotional activities. Ruby Ghuznavi the founder and Executive Chariman of Aranya continues to be a guiding hand with the organization.    

The Aminul Islam Young Artist's Award

The Bengal Foundation has signed an MoU with artist Aminul Islam's family to declare and administer the 'Aminul Islam Young Artist's Award,' on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 5 PM at the Bengal Shilpalaya. Aminul Islam is considered a pioneer of modern art in Bangladesh. He was one of the first graduates of the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, where he was in the company of the great masters of Bangladeshi art, including Quamrul Hassan, Safiuddin Ahmed and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. Islam made great contributions to the modern art movement and is regarded as one of the best artists of his generation. The Bengal Foundation hopes to promote and encourage young artists to master their craft with this award in his name.

Classical Music Workshop

A 4-day classical music workshop conducted by Suchisree Ray was held at Bengal Shilpalaya from 3 July. The free sessions focused on introducing the various genres of classical music to a class of 30 students who were screened at the beginning of the workshop. Suchisree Ray is a significant arrival in the arena of north Indian classical music. In her able and arresting rendition of Khayal, Thumri, Kajri and Chaiti, she makes an amazing combination of a suavity of poetic feel and consummate skill by extracting the essential boldness of the Agra-Gwalior gayaki and eloquence of the Benaras style. Gifted with a melodious voice of rare texture and untiring taalim she infuses in her unique recital the magnificence of tradition and a contemporaneity that testify to her originality.
